Laser Cut Lantern Patterns

I love this. I was having a heck of a time getting one step to work, though. Once I've drawn my lines and expanded the whole thing, I wasn't getting the right result when I merged everything. I'm no slouch with Illustrator, but I kept getting something like I'm showing in my attachment.

Anyways, I finally figured a way around it and made my own tutorial video so my students could make this in our Fab Lab (they do better with narration). Anyways, I wanted to share the video with you:

I did this project towards the end of my semester class, last spring. The guidelines were deliberately vague to encourage students to figure out solutions on their own or in collaboration with others. That was a mistake. I misunderstood their ability to think about shape and scale and as a result, there were a number of lanterns that didn't fit together the first time. When I do it again I will make sure that the basic shapes (top and bottom and a side) are made sequentially so that everything fits.
The other change I will make is to use 5mm MDF instead of ply. We have an Epilog Mini 18. It is a fantastic machine and I really like how it works. Cutting ply that thick though was not fun. My average cut time was about 26 minutes and I often had to go back and recut parts. This was mostly due to the cheap Indian ply I was using and Epilog was great about working with me to find solutions. The lantern with the trees and river was a learning experience for me as the detail was so fine that we had to use multiple, low power cuts to prevent burnthrough.
My students really enjoyed this project, even though they got pretty frustrated with the dimensional issues. The directions attached here as with my other teacher notes, are v1 and will need to be adapted for the machine you have and the age of the students.
